When alkaline copper plating brightener is used in plating plant, the contamination of plating solution by hexavalent chromium will also cause poor bonding of plating layer, which we will analyze in this article.

Generally speaking, a small amount of hexavalent chromium impurities will not cause bad bonding of the plated layer, but the presence of trace chromium ions (not more than 0.3mg/L) will make the plated layer uneven, darkening, etc.. If the amount is a little more (0.5~1.0mg/L), the cathodic current efficiency will be obviously reduced, and even the plated layer can not be deposited.

When using alkaline copper plating brightener, only when there are more impurities of hexavalent chromium ions present in the plating solution, the bonding of the plated layer is not strong. Then how to test whether there is more hexavalent chromium in the plating solution? There are two methods: one is to take 100~200mL of failure solution, add 0.2~0.4g of insurance powder, observe the change of the color of the plating solution, if there is more hexavalent chromium in the plating solution, the color of the plating solution becomes light green when adding the insurance powder (this is because of brown hexavalent chromium reduced to green trivalent chromium), and it is not the influence of hexavalent chromium if it does not change color.
